A TRIBUTE TO TOMMIE MILLER

On Friday December 24, 2010 Christmas Eve, former Montgomery County Board of Education President and tax appraiser Tommie Miller died at his home from a massive stroke. It wasn’t very long ago that I was with him at Major Cox’s Hog Killing in Smuteye, Alabama and dinning directly next to him at a newly opened restaurant. On each occasion he was in great spirits and full of life. Debra and I are deeply saddened by his passing and give our condolences to his family and close friends.

Tommie Miller served Montgomery admirably. He cared about the community and will be greatly missed. I use to always run into him. I would see him at local dinning spots, Cummings Funeral Home, the Fish Market or at the homes of mutual friends. He was always in good spirits. Tommie’s untimely death has shaken the community. First there was Councilman Willie Cook, then Andre Bolling and now Tommie Miller.

He transformed the Montgomery Public School. He was the principal force behind the new Carver High School, Bellingrath Middle School, Wilson Elementary School and several other significant initiatives for our public schools. Our community is better off because of him.

When I received the call that Tommie had died I was very surprised. He was in such a great mood each time I saw him very recently. He had such a peace about him that I commented about it to Debra. May God rest his soul and continue to bless his family and close friends.

In the words of my dad, You must honor the chair whether it is sitting, walking or lying down.”
