Griffin Speaks A LETTER FROM ALEXIS
My eight-year-old daughter, Alexis Ivana Griffin is a third grader at Bear Exploration Magnet School. We have been very pleased with the education she has received at the school. She started out at Alabama State University Early Childhood Center. Alexis’ first teacher was the legendary Ettra Seay. Alexis is now in the third grade going to the fourth grade. She approached me today and handed me copies of some of her writings. Alexis’ third grade teacher is Mrs. Sikes, the sister of Senator Wendell Mitchell. We were blessed to have Mrs. Sikes as Alexis’ teacher. I am so impressed with the writing ability of my eight-year-old daughter that I want to share with you a copy of one of her many writings. Alexis wrote the following on May 20th, 2002: This school year has been very successful in events, learning, and making friends. I couldn’t wait for Mrs. Sikes to start teaching me. For I knew the moment I walked in the door she was a wonderful teacher. It was amazing that we were able to raise so much money that two people from our class got to go to Camp Chandler to plant a tree. I could tell that Mrs. Hill was proud of them by her smile. They say you learn your times tables in third grade. Well Mrs. Sikes drilled us good and hard. When it comes to math times tables she doesn’t play. You better know them or suffer the consequences. It was amazing how we all came here as strangers and over a couple of days became the best of friends. For example, Breyonah and Gabrielle at first they didn’t know me and I didn’t know them. So we talked and got to know each other. Then we were the best of friends. So, it comes to this, we say our farewells and good byes and we miss each other all summer long, but we will meet again next year. Alexis is a straight A student and successful in everything that she seeks to accomplish. She is a shining star and the APPLE OF MY EYE! Greg Griffin is a free lance writer.
