Griffin Speaks HOSTING THIRTY-THREE AFRICAN KINGS
A couple of months ago at Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama I ran into Dr. John L. Alford Sr., former President of Alabama SCLC and Founding President of the Association for Children, Human Rights and Social Change. He informed me that he would be hosting thirty-three African Kings this summer in Montgomery. I immediately offered to assist him. He accepted my offer. My next order of business was to inform my wife Debra that we would be hosting at our home a barbecue for thirty-three African Kings. Debra surprised me with her excitement. So I immediately drove to Bullock County and purchased a goat from the grandfather of my paralegal. I had planned to fatten him up for the upcoming barbecue. My kids, Greg Jr. Alexis and Chris fell in love with the goat and named him Billy. I also had a huge super grill custom made at J. F. Ingram State Technical School. So there I was stuck with a goat in my backyard that I could not kill. The goat began to smell and the neighbors obviously began to complain. I came home one day and affixed to my front door was a yellow notice from animal control about the odor coming from my backyard. I immediately returned the goat to its original owner. He was very kind to allow me to return him. Billy the goat was happy to return to his parents. He ran over to his mom and dad and they each affectionately kissed. It was an amazing moment. I wanted to be able to tell the Kings that for their enjoyment, “I’ve killed my finest goat!” Well I suppose I will have to settle with “I’ve purchased the finest steaks Calhoun Foods had to offer.” In
the words of my dad, Dr. Melvin J. Griffin Sr.: “Don’t
get a College degree and have scared behind it!” Greg Griffin is a free lance writer. You can read his previous articles by visiting his web page at www.greggriffin.com or write to him at P.O. Box 250194 Montgomery, Alabama 36125-0194. |
