Griffin Speaks REV. BEECHER HICKS
Several years ago I was blessed with the opportunity to attend the 6000 member historic Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. It was a mountain top and watershed experience. The senior pastor of this magnificent church is the Rev. Dr. H. Beecher Hicks, Jr. one of the greatest ministers of all time. Dr. Hicks was chosen to serve as the fifth senior pastor of Metropolitan in June of 1977. Under his leadership Metropolitan has become one of the world’s most recognized and distinguished congregations. For a more detailed profile of this great minister I suggest you visit: http://www.drhbeecherhicks.com/profile.asp My blessing came during my visit with my best friend C. Howie Hodges II and his lovely wife, Elizabeth Jackson Hodges. Elizabeth “Beth” is the daughter of the late Maynard H. Jackson, former Mayor of Atlanta, Georgia. I informed Howie that my brother- in- law Lorenzo Harrison’s uncle was the pastor of a church in Washington, D.C. and that I would like to visit. Howie asked me what the pastor’s name was, I told him Rev. Dr. H. Beecher Hicks, Jr. I also told Howie that Rev. Hick’s sons were Morehouse men. Howie began to tell me more about this great man. I knew that my brother-in-law Lorenzo Harrison was very proud of the man who married his father’s sister, the former Elizabeth Harrison of Selma, Alabama, but I had no idea he was such a legendary figure. Lorenzo I suppose was trying to be humble. After a Saturday night of wonderful entertainment we
woke up to one of Beth’s fantastic breakfasts. We finished breakfast and
went to Metropolitan. It was as magnificent as everyone had described. Rev.
Hicks was the most dynamic minister that I had ever heard preach. If you are
ever in the vicinity of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. you
should definitely try to visit. There is surely a blessing waiting for
you. In
the words of my dad, Dr. Melvin J. Griffin Sr.: “Don’t
get a College degree and have scared behind it!” Greg Griffin is a free lance writer. You can read his previous articles by visiting his web page at www.greggriffin.com or write to him at P.O. Box 250194 Montgomery, Alabama 36125-0194. |
