Griffin Speaks

THE HARRIOTT II

Instead of spending a small fortune to go out of town for the fourth of July, the Griffins decided to stay at home and enjoy a riverboat cruise. My father, Dr. Melvin Julius Overdielovewell Griffin Sr. came home a few days ago and asked if we were interested in joining him on the Harriott II for a dinner cruise on Friday, July 3, 2009 at his expense. Everyone accepted my dad’s generous invitation except my daughter Alexis. She requires a two week notice for all social activities outside her normal social calendar which includes social activities with friends: Taylor, Jay, Emmy, Erica, Justin and teen socialite Jennifer Pugh.

For two hours we re-lived history while we enjoyed a relaxing cruise on Montgomery’s newest downtown attraction. The food was wonderful and plentiful. My 79 year old dad enjoyed dancing after dinner and received applause from the audience when he sat down. My wife’s former band teacher, Mr. Pugh provided the entertainment as we cruised along the Alabama River.

The Harriot II is 96 feet long and three decks tall. It can accommodate as many as 400 passengers. The riverboat was built in 1981 and refurbished extensively in 2009. The Harriott II provides cruises for every occasion. From group functions and private parties to dinner cruises and business gatherings, the Harriott II is a must do attraction in Montgomery, Alabama. We simply had a ball at a very reasonable cost.

We have one more summer activity planned before Greg Jr. heads off to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. We are travelling to Boston, Massachusetts and Cambridge, Massachusetts for a week so that Alexis can visit Harvard University and decide if it will be one of the Ivy League schools she will apply to. My choice for her is Harvard, but the ultimate decision will be left up to her. She is still considering Spellman College which is fine, but I think Harvard University, Yale, M I T, Dartmouth College, Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania or one of the Seven Sister Colleges:

Mt. Holyoke College, Vassar College, Wellesley College, Smith College, Radcliffe College, Bryn Mawr College and Barnard College will have fewer distractions for her than Spelman College sitting right next to Morehouse College even though it is as close as any black woman can get to heaven on earth!! In my opinion education first! She is so beautiful I know those Morehouse men everyone of them would be in line proposing marriage.   We will do a side trip to Martha’s Vineyard and soak up a little sun for a day or two then head on back to Montgomery, Alabama. I will share with you the details in a later article. I hope that your Fourth of July weekend was as wonderful as the Griffin’s Fourth of July weekend. We are headed to Rob Tate’s house to eat a few ribs now. You all take care now, you hear!

In the words of my dad, You must honor the chair whether it is sitting, walking or lying down.”
