IN MEMORY OF
MRS. AMY LOU STALLWORTH LAWRENCE

Mrs. Amy Lou Stallworth Lawrence a longtime resident of Lowndes County, Alabama died of natural causes at the age of ninety-six. She comes from a long line of long survivors. Mrs. Lawrence’s mother died at the age of ninety-four and her mother’s mother died at the age of ninety-four. She has two surviving siblings who are well into their nineties. They truly fulfilled the Fifth Commandment, the only commandment that came with a promise. “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you!”

The news of Mrs. Lawrence’s passing spread throughout the Black Belt rapidly. Several citizens from all walks of life gathered at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Gordonsville, Alabama to celebrate her home going. She was eulogized by her grand son-in-law, Television Evangelist the Reverend Gary L. Crum, Sr., Senior Pastor of the Ellwood Community Church in Selma, Alabama.

Mrs. Lawrence epitomized the greatest of human values. She was full of love and compassion. She touched the lives and hearts of everyone she met. The sacrifices and austerities she endured while growing up in the segregated South ninety-six years ago are incomprehensible to the mind but easily admired, appreciated and adored by the heart; for Mrs. Amy Lou Stallworth Lawrence was nothing other than love in its purest and grandest form. She was to many a Saint!

Mrs. Lawrence enlightened those who had the pleasure and honor to know her that the highest form of satisfaction is achieved not from the accumulation of material things, but through the selfless service of the God in humanity. She saw everyone she served as a living child of God and through her love of God, expanded her love for humanity. She was to many a Saint!

Throughout her ninety-six years of life she gave herself to family, friends and often times to the unloved and destitute with an unwavering strength borne of her intense life of spiritual discipline. She served Jesus with all of her heart and mind so much so she was the practical embodiment of the perfect disciple of Jesus Christ. She served him without a trace of pride.

Mrs. Lawrence was born on August 13, 1911 in Gordonsville, Alabama. She was the second child of Amos and Sallie Stallworth. She was called home by the Lord on December 28, 2007 in White Hall, Alabama. She was converted at an early age and joined Woods Chapel Christian Church. It was at Woods Chapel that she would become a Deaconess and Church Treasurer. She would later become affectionately known as Mother of the Church.

Mrs. Lawrence received her education in the Lowndes County Public School System. She would also matriculate at Alabama State University. During her professional

career, she served as a Substitute and Head Start teacher in the Lowndes County Public School System. She was a faithful member of the Bright Star Chapter#747 Order of Eastern Star and Good Samaritan Society.

Mrs. Lawrence was united in holy matrimony on June 6, 1937 to Willie James Lawrence, who preceded her in death after sixty-three years of marriage. To this union, twelve children were born. One son Charlie Lewis preceded her in death.

To many she was a Saint. To my wife, Debra she was Grandmother. To my children, Greg Jr. Alexis and Christopher she was Great Grandmother Lawrence. To my mother-in-law, Mrs. Wilma Thomas she was Mama. To me she was a Saint!!!!!!!

Somewhere in Heaven I am certain that Grandmother Lawrence is singing her favorite hymn: Blessed Assurance. Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his Spirit, washed in his blood. This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savoir all the day long; this is my story; this is my song, praising my savoir all the day long.
