JIM CROW AND ME
Stories from my life as a civil rights lawyer:
Solomon S. Seay, Jr. with Delores R. Boyd

The legendary Civil Rights Attorney Solomon S. Seay Jr. along with his collaborator former U.S. Federal Magistrate Judge Delores Boyd has written a masterpiece. Seay’s memoir belongs on every bookshelf in America. No library of Civil Rights history is complete without it. When his legal career began in Montgomery, Alabama there were only nine other black attorneys in the state. This group of attorneys started the fall of Jim Crow segregation.

Attorney Seay grew up much like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in an upper middle class black family. His mother was a schoolteacher who in those days was the equivalent of a medical doctor and his father was a renowned minister. It was because of this family background that Attorney Solomon Seay refused to allow anyone to dismiss him with the wave of a hand or a shrug of the shoulder.  Seays were taught by their parents to never accept second class status.

Attorney Seay’s memoir is full of powerful vignettes; it takes the studious reader through a multitude of emotions. I laughed, cried, felt fear and at times wanted to put down the book and kick some tail. This spirited memoir with its moving, thought-provoking, and powerful vignettes clearly reveals that freedom is not free.

Attorney Seay and Judge Delores Boyd has written a stellar work that gives full credence to the old African proverb; “Until the lions have their historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunter.” I give this remarkable book a four star rating and strongly recommend that you add it to your shopping cart this holiday.
