Griffin Speaks MOM ALWAYS LIKED YOU BEST
I
enjoyed the Smothers Brothers show during my younger days because it was one
of the most influential and controversial American Television shows of the
Vietnam Era. The material presented on the show was critical of the
mainstream and sympathetic to the emerging counter culture. The show had
three specific targets of satire—racism, the President of the United
States, and the Vietnam War. This content would eventually lead to the show
cancellation. It has been years since I had heard anything about the
Smothers Brothers. I can still remember Tommy Smother’s signature line
“Mom always liked you best!” Debra has won this one, we won’t be
spending money on airline tickets to see the Smothers Brothers show in
Washington, D.C. instead she is negotiating to go and see “RUN
DMC”. I just simply told her that we would have to see as I
glanced back down at the Smothers Brothers advertisement. In the words of my dad, “You must honor the chair whether it is sitting, walking or lying down.” Greg Griffin is a free lance writer.
