MRS.
BOB RILEY FOR GOVERNOR
Republican incumbent Bob Riley easily won a second term in
November 2006, polling 58 percent of the vote against Democratic Lt. Gov.
Lucy Baxley. State law prohibits Governor Riley from seeking another term in
2010. Term limits for state officials have been around since colonial times.
Presently, 36 states have term limits of different types for their
governors. When Governor George Wallace was faced with the dilemma of term
limits he convinced his wife to seek the office of governor. It was
generally understood that Mrs. Wallace would be a titular governor while he
would be the de facto governor. They were a winning team and she served 17
months before passing in 1968. For years I have been a strong advocate for
term limits. Today I am having second thoughts. During these tough economic
times it concerns me that we are not able to re elect Governor Bob Riley, a
governor who has been a fountain of light and of hope for the state of
Alabama. Governor Riley has grappled mightily with the affairs of this state
and he has successfully assembled a world class team. With one heart so many
in Alabama feel, and with one mind acknowledge that among the greatest
people that have ever trod this earth are governor and Mrs. Bob Riley. Mrs.
Bob Riley having served as first lady since her husband was sworn into
office on January 20, 2003 should expand her Petticoat Politics platform and
run for governor in 2010.
In the words of my dad,
“You must honor
the chair whether it is sitting, walking or lying down.”
