RICH AND STUPID

Some rich people are “rich and stupid”, what a combination. Don’t get me wrong it’s true some of my best friends really are rich, and I must admit that there are some very intelligent rich people. However I also know that there are some really stupid rich people. All you need to do to see that this statement is true is to turn on your television and watch “Entertainment Tonight”. You see many people think that the poor are stupid and the rich are smart. “Why if they were not stupid they wouldn’t be poor.” Well that is certainly not true in most cases.

Many of us are one bad illness or hospitalization away from filing bankruptcy. Truth be told over half of all bankruptcies in America are because of outrageous medical bills. So the next time you turn your nose up at the poor just remember if little “Brad” or little “Angel” were to fall ill you too could be headed to the poor house with all your degrees in tow. The fact that you have medical insurance does not necessarily insulate you from the fate of poverty. In 2005, two-thirds of families that struggled to pay their medical bills had health insurance.

So what are the revealing signs of a rich person who is stupid? A stupid rich person is someone who only thinks that their children should receive a good education and educating poor kids doesn’t matter. A stupid rich person is someone who thinks that he was anointed by God to be rich and therefore he is more favored by God. A stupid rich person is caught up in materialism and is oblivious to the circumstances of his fellow man. A stupid rich person is someone who has plenty of money but is given to unintelligent decisions or acts. He acts in an unintelligent and careless manner. Does that sound like someone you know or seen on television?

I told my children that I would rather they be intelligent and broke than rich and stupid. The best protection from being stupid is to regularly visit your public library and read as often as possible anything that you can get your hands on. I have not met a well read person who was stupid. He may be broke, but he sure wasn’t stupid. In what category would you place “O. J. Simpson?

In the words of my dad, You must honor the chair whether it is sitting, walking or lying down.”
