Griffin Speaks SURVIVING
AN EARTHQUAKE
We spent a few days at
Wellesley helping Alexis get settled in. The campus was beautiful. The
school is full of beautiful and smart women. We were very impressed. Alexis
is blessed with a phenomenal roommate, who is a champion swimmer, champion
tennis player and incredibly intelligent. Alexis is very happy in Wellesley
land with her new friends and classmates. We were on the New
Jersey Turnpike when the earthquake hit. We did not feel a thing. We did not
find out about the earthquake until we saw the woman in the tollbooth. She
was very scared. I paid the toll and continued without worry looking up and
not down. Fortunately, we made it
back home just before Hurricane Irene hit. I am still exhausted from the
trip, but it was worth every mile to leave Alexis at that wonderful school.
If you have a daughter or granddaughter, I highly recommend Wellesley
College. It is an amazing place. I met one young African-American woman from
Chicago who turned Harvard down this year so that she could attend Wellesley
College. She said that when Harvard called her to ask why she turned them
down, she told them that she only had one chance to attend Wellesley
College, but could attend Harvard University for graduate or professional
school. Wellesley College is the number one liberal arts college in America for
women. In the words of my dad, “You must honor the chair whether it is sitting, walking or lying down.” Greg Griffin is a free lance writer. You can read his previous articles by visiting his web page at www.greggriffin.com or write to him at P.O. Box 250194 Montgomery, Alabama 36125-0194. |
