Griffin Speaks TAME YOUR TONGUE
When was the last time you said something negative about someone? When was the last time you passed on a piece of gossip saying: “I am not one to gossip, But.” When was the last time you said something cruel to someone you love? God has much to say about the tongue: "A tree is identified by its fruit. Make a tree good, and its fruit will be good. Make a tree bad, and its fruit will be bad. You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in your heart determines what you say. A good person produces good words from a good heart, and an evil person produces evil words from an evil heart. And I tell you this that you must give an account on judgment day of every idle word you speak. The words you say now reflect your fate then; either you will be justified by them or you will be condemned." Matthew 12:33-37 If you can control your tongue then you can control yourself. An untamed tongue can ruin your life. People can tame all kinds of animals and birds and reptiles and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is an uncontrollable evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it breaks out into curses against those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! James 3:2-10 You should make every effort to tame your tongue by working at it every day. Even though it is impossible to completely tame the monster tongue you can tame it to a certain extent. You will be better off. If you want to try and tame it, you should recognize that the totally untamed tongue does an awful lot of harm. You should eliminate curse words from your vocabulary. You should always have a positive attitude towards your fellow man. You should be patient with your spouse. You should always think twice before you speak. There are several types of tongues: the flattering tongue, Psalm 5:9; the backbiting tongue, Proverbs 25:23; the proud tongue, Psalm 12:3; 73:9; the soft tongue, Proverbs 25:15; the lying tongue, Psalm 109:2; Proverbs 6:17; the destructive tongue, Proverbs 17:4; the deceitful tongue, Psalm 120:2; the healing tongue, Proverbs 12:18; the perverted tongue, Proverbs 10:31; 17:20 There have been many divorces because of an untamed tongue. You can not take words back. Be careful what you say. Your next words could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back! In the words of my dad, “If these gas prices get any higher I am going to buy me a horse!” Greg Griffin is a free lance writer.
