Griffin Speaks THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
Kindergarten, high school, college, graduate school, law school, and medical school are all exciting when it comes to the first day of school. We all are somewhat apprehensive. We fear the unknown. What if my teacher is a jerk? What if I don’t like my classmates? The biggest factor that will determine how your first day will go is “personality”. Are you a jerk? Will your classmates like you? On your first day of school walk into the classroom with a confidant yet humble attitude. Show yourself friendly to both your teacher and fellow classmates. Be the first person to speak. You will be amazed at how people will react to you. Let us start with Kindergarten. Prepare the kindergartener by gradually exposing him to his new school. I have already taken my preschoolers ages 3 and 4 to Alabama State Early Childhood Center to meet their teachers and principal. I walked them around the building pointing out their new classrooms. They have already played on the beautiful playground. My 7 year old also was gradually exposed in the same manner. They are ready! My other three children 15, 17 and 19 are seasoned and the first day of school won’t be exciting for Greg Jr again until he starts professional school. Alexis and Chris won’t be excited again until they start college. Debra and I have always guided our kids instead of restricting them when it came to selecting friends. For the most part I have thought all of my kids friends were good picks. Some parents are tempted to make rules about who their kids can be friends with or hang with. Take my advice don’t be too hard on them. They may rebel if you are too strict. My kids have made great selections with the exception of maybe one or two. I just threw that in there to tease their friends. The big day is rapidly approaching so remember put on a big smile and enjoy your first day of school. Greg Griffin is a free lance writer.
