THE IVY LEAGUE

ILast week college acceptance and rejection letters went out to thousands of prospective college students. Many of those students had dreamed of being accepted to an Ivy League school their whole life. Many students last week were terribly disappointed.  The original Ivy League schools are Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, founded 1764. Brown’s total student enrollment is 7,595; nine percent of whom are international; Yale University, New Haven, CT., founded 1701. Yale’s total student enrollment is 11,359; Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, founded 1865. Cornell’s total student enrollment is 22,740; University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded 1749 as the Academy of Philadelphia. Penn’s total student enrollment is 23,305; Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, founded 1769. Dartmouth’s total student enrollment is 5,664; Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey, founded in 1746; Princeton’s total student enrollment is 4,676; Columbia University, New York, New York; founded 1754. Columbia’s total student enrollment is 23,650 and Harvard University, Cambridge, Ma; founded 1636. Harvard’s total student enrollment is 18,000. These original Ivy League schools typically enrolled men only. Beginning in the 1800s, forward thinking individuals decided to bring educational opportunities that would equal those offered at the all male Ivy League schools. Formally organized as Sister Ivies in 1927, the Seven Sister schools became the equivalent of the male Ivies and thus became the Sister Ivies.

 The original Seven Sister Ivies are:

Smith College, North Hampton, Massachusetts, founded 1871. Smith’s total student enrollment is 2750;

Wellesley College, Wellesley, Ma, founded 1870. Wellesley’s total student enrollment is 2400; Mt. Holyoke College, South Hadley, Ma, founded 1837; Mt. Holyoke’s total student enrollment is 2,100; Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, New York, founded 1861. Vassar’s total student enrollment is 2400 male and female students; (Vassar has become a co-ed college); Radcliffe College, Cambridge, Ma, founded 1879. Radcliffe merged with Harvard University in 1999 and is now officially known as Radcliffe Institute for advanced study; Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, founded 1885. Bryn Mawr has a total student enrollment of 1,781 and Barnard College, New York, New York. Barnard was founded in 1889. Barnard has a total student enrollment of 2,297.

Fortunately for women, they have more opportunities for an Ivy League education because of these sister schools. I encourage all women who desire to attend the original male Ivies to also apply to the female Ivies. Your chances for a top rate education will increase.

In the words of my dad, You must honor the chair whether it is sitting, walking or lying down.”
