THE UNITY BREAKFAST SPEECH

Our first black United States attorney general delivered the keynote speech, Sunday, March 8, 2009 at a Unity breakfast at George Wallace Community College in Selma, Alabama 44 years after “Bloody Sunday” celebrating the Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march. It seemed as though everyone in Selma was there and everyone in Selma was on the program to speak. In preparation for the event I wore comfortable shoes because I was expecting to be jumping up and down on my feet throughout his speech. Unfortunately that did not happen. The speech was not the type that I was accustomed to hearing in Selma, Alabama. However his continued support for the Voting Rights act was loud and clear. I continue to be a huge fan of our new attorney general and wish him much success. I was pleased that he did not repeat the remark that he made in a speech to Justice Department employees marking Black History month where he said the “United States is a nation of cowards on matters of race” . I was surprised that he came to Selma, Alabama and gave a shout out to former Birmingham United States Attorney Doug Jones and did not in his speech mention the legendary J. L. Chestnut and Marie Foster, the mother of the voting rights movement. According to Congressman Artur Davis it was his first official speech outside of Washington, D.C. since his confirmation as Attorney General. I am sure the next time he visits Selma he will bring me to my feet.

In the words of my dad, You must honor the chair whether it is sitting, walking or lying down.”
