TRAFFIC STOPS

I have long been a great supporter of law enforcement. In addition to my having many friends in the field I just have a great deal of respect for law and order. In the past three weeks traffic officers have pulled me over once a week. The first stop was for an alleged brake light being out. The second stop my 15 year old son was driving me with his learner’s permit and the last and most recent stop was today for a tag that was not expired.

On each occasion the officer was courteous and let me go once he determined that I no law had been broken. On each occasion he was apologetic for any inconvenience he may have caused me. On each occasion I was in an expensive sports car in the “hood”. On each occasion it crossed my mind that I may have been racially profiled.

I thought about calling my friend the police chief Art Baylor, but I am not yet convinced that I am being racially profiled. Art is doing such a wonderful job as the first African American Police Chief that I don’t want to bother him without being certain that some of his officers are rogue. It just seems so strange that I have been in Montgomery, Alabama since 1987 without being stopped by an officer in 23 years until I start driving an expensive sport Mercedes. You go and figure!

In the words of my dad, You must honor the chair whether it is sitting, walking or lying down.”
