WHITE STUDENT BECOMES
MOREHOUSE
On Saturday May 17th, 2008 Debra and I will be traveling to Atlanta, Georgia to attend the graduation reception and graduation for my cousin Jared Hunt. I am very proud of him as he is the first person in my family to graduate from Morehouse College since I graduated in 1980. So twenty-eight years later I will stand proud as I personally observe another relative officially become a “Morehouse Man!” Jared is the son of Tommy and Wanda Hunt. I was very pleased to give my cousin Wanda a call to let her know that we would be attending the festivities. The commencement ceremony this year will be historical in that a white student, 22 year old Josh Packwood will become the first Euro-American in the college’s 141-year history to serve as class valedictorian. I am looking forward to hearing his speech and meeting him on Sunday. As former Morehouse College Student Body President I want to officially greet him and welcome him to the Morehouse Brotherhood. Who knows he may be the first Morehouse Man to become President of the United States of America. My former classmate Dr. Emmett D. Carson will serve as the commencement speaker. Emmett serves as the first CEO and President of Silicon Valley Community Foundation. The foundation has 1.9 billion dollars in assets. Emmett was brilliant as a student at Morehouse back in the day. I was one class ahead of him, but he was so smart and outstanding everyone knew him. “Mr. Brains” he was. That’s how I referred to him behind his back. I am looking forward to visiting with him and hearing his speech as well. In the words of my dad, “If these gas prices get any higher I am going to buy me a horse!” Greg Griffin is a free lance writer.
